Dragon-like Creatues in Neopets

The ladies in the house are obsessed with Neopets, one of the many popular virtual games that have been around for a while now.  I was skeptical at first, but for a person like me, when you weave a whole magical universe, I’m hooked. I like getting lost in realms that are different from ours – where everything is possible, where the rules of physics or logic match closely with whatever your heart desires. Fairies, dragons, bold new worlds to explore, who wouldn’t love that?

Neopets is a game built around a realm called Neopia. Neopia is a conglomeration of lands with different species of people/creatures that co-exist in relative harmony. Like with any other universe, there are many places to discover and the lure of adventure within their lands is strong. To give you an idea of what sort of places exist in Neopia, here’s a map of their world.

The game begins when you become a member and are handed a Neopet to take care of and raise. As you venture through the different lands, you become more experienced and get a chance to own more than one mythical pet. Being the dragon fanatic that I am, I was immediately to all the dragon-like virtual pets one could have. Here are my favorites.

Scorchio –

They seek warmer climates where they can practice their fire-breathing without setting everything alight and therefore occupy desert areas and volcanic regions. They are extremely outgoing and friendly and a big favorite among the Neopians. The most famous Scorchio is Glubgar who is known for spelunking in the volcanoes of Tyrannia, looking for gems.

Skeith –

They are ferocious looking and one of the largest inhabitants of this universe. Their size and looks helps them in their pursuit of laziness (I sometimes envy how lazy they can be and still get away with it). They are so anti-work that they get smaller creatures to do their bidding. They are living the life! The most famous Skeith is Commander Flint, an orange colored leader of the Brute Squad which is a Neopian version of the Secret Service.

Shoyru –

Adorable yet fiery, the Shoyru is known to be loyal to a fault. They are the most popular pet species, so much so that April 2nd is called Shoyru day. Treat them with love and respect and you would have earned a friend for life. If they feel they are being treated badly or unjustly, you better watch out.  The most famous Shoyru is Torshac, a scout that flies around at night, keeping a ear out for secrets. As a result, he has foiled many thievery attempts.

Draik –

The Draik are said to have suddenly appeared out of nowhere leading to speculation that the are from another world. They are seen by many as a symbol of wealth on account of them being rare. The most famous Draik is Miles, a scholar from Brightvale. He mans the Wheel of Knowledge in Neopia.

Do you play Neopets? What are your favorite characters? What are your other favorite games with dragons in them? Leave a comment.

My Favorite Movie Dragons

The cinematic world has turned these fiery beasts to larger than life beauties that we’ve all been in awe of. From being creatures only known through stories to being depicted on the large screen, dragons have made the film watching experience exhilarating. Of all of the film depictions, these are my most favorite.
Draco from Dragonheart (circa 1996)

Rob Cohen directed this masterpiece before he went on to direct Fast and Furious. I still giggle at Dennis Quaid's banter with a Sean Connery voiced dragon.

Dragon from Shrek (circa 2001)

Called Dragon, the beast is a striking balance of ferocity and femininity. I love her more for her romance with a donkey called Donkey voiced by Eddie Murphy

Smaug from the Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (circa 2013)

His beastly size, the way he slithers and looks at you , it's so scary-amazing! The feature that makes this dragon so awe-inspiring is the voice. Who doesn't love Benedict Cumberbatch's voice!

Falkor from The NeverEnding Story (circa 1984)

He's not the ferocious beast the other dragons are. He's a luck dragon who looks like a giant dog but for anyone who lost themselves in the movie, he became a companion for all your adventures.

Hungarian Horntail from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (circa 2005)

I remember being enthralled when I first read about the Hungarian Horntail. It is the moment in the Harry Potter film series when the movie actually becomes scary and you get a feel for what Harry is in for.

Toothless from How to Train your Dragon (circa 2010)

This. This is why the Night Fury is on my list!

Who are your favorite movie dragons?
